The Strait of Hormuz, roughly 21 miles wide at its narrowest point, sits between Iran and Oman and connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman. It is the sole maritime exit for the vast majority of oil exported from Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait, the UAE, Bahrain, and Qatar. Iran has repeatedly threatened closure as leverage in past confrontations; the IRGC Navy has the asymmetric capability to severely disrupt commercial traffic even short of a full closure.
