This panel charted an ATS enrollment index and stated a 2002 peak of roughly 79,500 falling to 44,700 by 2023. Those figures could not be verified and are inconsistent with the Association of Theological Schools’ own reporting of about 75,000 students system-wide in 2024–25. The series has been removed pending re-population from the ATS Annual Data Tables.
The Black church has historically served as primary mutual-aid network, civic organizer, and political mobilization engine in communities where no comparable government infrastructure exists. Pastoral vacancies here carry consequences well beyond Sunday services.
