EIA annual estimates of crude oil and petroleum liquids transiting the Strait of Hormuz. The long-run trend from approximately 15M to over 21M bbl/day illustrates how the chokepoint has grown more critical — not less — over the past two decades.
Qatar, the world’s largest LNG exporter, ships virtually all of its natural gas through Hormuz — meaning the strait’s security status also determines European and Asian LNG availability. Saudi Arabia’s East-West Pipeline (Petroline) and the UAE’s Abu Dhabi Crude Oil Pipeline offer partial bypass capacity totalling roughly 6.5M bbl/day — less than a third of Hormuz daily flow.
