DRC Ebola outbreaks — deaths by event1976 – 2025
10th Outbreak — 2018 North Kivu
The 2018–2020 North Kivu / Ituri outbreak was the second-largest in history: 3,481 confirmed cases and 2,299 deaths. It occurred in an active conflict zone. The rVSV-ZEBOV vaccine was deployed under a ring vaccination strategy — the first large-scale use in an ongoing outbreak. It targeted the Zaire strain, which all DRC outbreaks used until 2025.
