Each bar is one year’s global mean surface temperature measured against the 1951–1980 average. The baseline is a convention, not a natural zero — what matters is the shape. It is flat and noisy for a century, and then it is not.
NASA GISTEMP v4, land and ocean combined, annual January–December. 2026 is excluded because it is a partial year — the source publishes no annual figure until December is in.
A different measurement entirely — an absolute annual mean in Fahrenheit for the lower 48, not a global anomaly in Celsius. It is here because the global figure is the one people argue about and this is the one they live in. The dashed line is the 20th-century average of 52.01°F.
NOAA nClimDiv, contiguous United States, annual. Absolute degrees Fahrenheit — deliberately not plotted on the same axis as the global anomaly above, which is a different quantity in different units against a different baseline.
